WHILE IN LABOUR…

Written By: Lizzy Oyebola Oyekunle

I held the iron edge of the bed firmly as my stomach contracted for the umpteenth time.

It’d been ten hours since the labor started!

“These babies!!!” My inside screamed. “Do you even know what you are putting me through now? Do you?” I perspired the more.

“Can’t you babies come out peacefully and stop disturbing me? Ehn? Can’t you” I bit my lips and tightened my shut eyes.

My husband had been outside the delivery room since I was wheeled in and looking at him with the side of my eye, I pitied him.

His hands were interlocked and his chin rested in them. His eyes were shut too and he kept walking to and fro the corridor. He was obviously firing up prayers.

I felt a hand tug at the wall of my inside and I screamed, waking up from my pity party.

“Doctor! You are not doing your job o…. Pull them out naaaaa” I cried out loudly as I grabbed my gynae’s hand.

She shook my hand off hers.

“Mrs. Pearl, stop interfering please. I know my job and please stop dictating to me. If you find it difficult to keep your mouth zipped, I might have to walk out of this labour’s room now” My gynae said, almost angrily.

I calmed down a bit but it didn’t last as I felt a sore movement against my cervix that made me feel so raw!

I cringed!

“The head is coming out oooooooo… Help!” I screamed again.

I could see the woman who met me in the labour room being wheeled out after delivery.

I started crying as I felt hopeless.

“Now, Mrs. Pearl, do you want a cesarean section?” My gynae asked and I shook my head.

“God didn’t tell me that. He particularly told me a normal delivery and my babies are in the normal positions, right?” I screamed and explained at the same time.

“So, please help us as we help you. Your screams are scaring the babies away.” She said and my eyes widened

“Scared?… I am sorry… You should understand… See that woman who was there… She has… ” I was saying when I felt a painful slap on my thigh.

What a wicked gynae!

I blinked severally so I could see her face as tears had covered my eyes all of a sudden.

“Sorry for that but that should be a reawakening slap for you. We are not here to joke. You have been looking unto God for this gift for many years now and by His Grace, we have three healthy boys on their way and surprisingly, you do not need a CS. That woman was wheeled out because she gave birth. Fine! But did the baby cry?No! Why? The child had long died in her! Stop comparing yourself with the other women!… The pain is probably too small for you, if not you won’t be seeing other women.” she said very angrily, sweat beads on her forehead

I shivered.

The baby died? Oh my!

“Now, I don’t need your comparisons, screams, arguments or complaints. Just push!”

“Okay” I said fearfully but obediently, closing my eyes in pain.

“So push!” She said and I tried hard to no avail.

“It’s okay to cry anyways. Let your tears flow because that’s a normal reaction to pain. But sha push. Oya, push!”

I tried to sit up a bit, holding the bed rest behind me. Closing my eyes, pursing my lips and widening my nose with my legs suspended in the air, I pushed!

A baby flew out!

“Now, push harder… Good girl!” My ‘wicked’ doctor patted my back.

I repeated the first method and the second jumped out too!

I became so weak!

“Hey, don’t give up now! Push harder” She said but my throat had become so dry that I wheezed.

“I want some water. Please give me some water” I cried out loud. She shook her head.

“No water. That would weaken you. Just push. Sorry dearie. One more time…Push”

Don’t give up
It’s not over
When you give up
Then it’s over
Hold on to the Lord
Trouble not your heart….

I heard my best song travel inside the room and blowing at my sweaty face like a cooling fan.

I turned to look at the window and saw my husband’s face. I knew he was the one singing. As he sang, he sent me several thumbs-ups.

“Darl…” I somewhat tried to whisper when an irritating sensation came over me. I sneezed loudly ultimately, I pushed!

They are thirteen years now and I can’t but thank God for their lives.

As I see them passing the ball to each other, smiling and giggling happily as they aimed for the goal post, I can’t but wave my hands to the Lord.

After reading through my labour story, you must have learnt some lessons right?

Well, I have some more to share with you as the Spirit guides me.

1. Though you are in a labour room of pains, sicknesses or anything, the Great Physician is there with you with His nurses (the angels)

2. You have something inside of you that must be given birth to as a lot of people are waiting for the manifestation of your glory! (My husband was outside the room)

3. Stop interfering or dictating to God for He knows what to do.

4. Your tears are allowed but no complaints, frustration or screaming. Just a cry to God, not the frustrating tears to quench the Devil’s thirst!

5. When you get in God’s way quite often and He loves you, He might have to slap you! – He chastiseth he that He loves.

6. Don’t compare your life with anyone else’s.

Some will laugh all through their lives!

Some will laugh in the morning and cry at night!

Some will cry in the morning and laugh at night!

Some will cry all through their lives.

7. Immediately the gynae slapped me, I saw her clearly!
Many times we need God’s slap to remind us of what His face looks like. The Holy Spirit’s pinches.

You can draw out your own lessons but…

REMEMBER TO PUSH!

  • Pray Until Something Happens
  • Pray Until Satan Hushes
  • Pray Until the Spirit Hovers
  • Pray Until Sicknesses are Healed
  • Pray Until Self is Hung
  • Pray Until Saturated in Holiness

Keep on pushing!

The best is yet to come!

Good evening loved ones.

  1. This really spoke to me: “Don’t compare your life with anyone else’s.”
    I’d PUSH:
    Pray Until Something Happens
    Pray Until Satan Hushes
    Pray Until the Spirit Hovers
    Pray Until Sicknesses are Healed
    Pray Until Self is Hung
    Pray Until Saturated in Holiness

    1. Great lesson here.
I had the same experience and learnt my lesson.

I was in the labour room and was screaming in serious labour pain.

I saw a woman beside me laying on the bed without any sign of pain
I told the nurse why can’t i have that kind of peaceful rest the pain is too much. She rebuked me and asked me to thank God for the experience because it shows I will soon leave the labour room with my bundle of joy. As far as they know they do not know when the other woman will leave as she is not in labour and they might have to transfer her to theater.

I thank God in my mind and face my business.

Let God deal with me instead of looking at others..

I refused to compare. Our life journeys are different. The potter has a different plans for every of his children

  2. I will
    Pray Until Something Happens
    Pray Until Satan Hushes
    Pray Until the Spirit Hovers
    Pray Until Sicknesses are Healed
    Pray Until Self is Hung
    Pray Until Saturated in Holiness

    Keep on pushing!

My life is definitely going to bring forth bundles of Joy.

    Thank you Mama for this

  3. I really love this part

    REMEMBER TO PUSH!
    Pray Until Something Happens
    Pray Until Satan Hushes
    Pray Until the Spirit Hovers
    Pray Until Sicknesses are Healed
    Pray Until Self is Hung
    Pray Until Saturated in Holiness
    Keep on pushing!
