THE MAN IN THE MIRROR

FRANCIS: Do you know what you look like Sarah? (Pauses and shakes his head as he wipes his face with a hanky) You look big like a pig, black like gutter water and your nose looks like a piece of burnt carrot. Has anyone told you before? This big yellow birthmark on your neck makes you ridiculous, in fact, from head to toes, there is nothing good to point at, nothing! (He moves away as he hisses)

FAST FORWARD: The next time Sarah went out, she got a nice hood that covered her heads to her neck, a nice goggle, some bags of slimming tea and some drugs for catarrh from too much crying.

>>>>>>>>

TEACHER: Come over here Sope! (He comes forward) Sope, you are a dunce! I have heard people quote ex-dunces who became something in future but I see no ray of hope in you. You ought to be selling nuts!

FAST FORWARD: Though Sope still goes to school because his mum wouldn’t allow him sell nuts, he sits at the back, looks sad and sees nuts on the board instead of equations!

>>>>>>>>>>>>

LIZZY: Hello Sope and Sarah, come here lemme talk to you!

Do you feel so frustrated and sorrowful?

What your friends, parents, relatives and all around have said about you and how you look and what you have, is it killing you?

Do you feel as if there is a hammer beating heavily at your chest?

Do you feel the content of your bones pouring out of them as you fall and fold yourself in despair?

Do you ask “why me? Why me? Why me?” in tears as Francis’ words ring in your ears?

What of when your friends call you a ‘woman’ because you are not muscular or because your voice sounds feminine?

You are ugly! Why are you this long like a pole? What, you are too fair to a fault! You are so black like the back of a pot! Chai, you are too busty! Why are you this short? Oh please don’t sing abeg. You remind me of the frog when you do! Your eyes are scary, eew! Why is your nose like that, gosh!

Those words are hurting right? Hmmmm…Let me prescribe a bulletproof wear for you to wear so as to avoid another attack next time.

The name is joy!

Christians, you have dwelt too long in the realm of happiness, it is time now to move to the Kingdom of Joy!

Joy and happiness…is there any difference?

Oh yes!

Happiness is when someone says “You are beautiful’ and you start feeling giddy whistling ‘Today’s gonna be great mehn!’ as you catwalk down the dormitory. Someone else meets you and makes a funny face. “What’s with that expression? Oh my! You look funny I can’t explain” and the already blown balloon of happiness deflates ‘sharperly’

Joy is this: Even when they say you are beautiful or you are ugly. Or they predict your future as if they are seers negatively or positively, yet, you are smiling! (Not smiling now and reaching your room to say ‘God, why me? Why me? With tears and catarrh!”…because, all you see in the mirror is God’s image!

Joy is for the Spiritual! It is one of the fruit of the Spirit!

If the joy of the Lord is your strength, the absence of that joy means weakness for you!

Stand up!

I say Stand in the Might of Your Lord!

Why should mere mortal snatch your happiness from you? Why?

Why should you allow someone who is not even God dictate your life?

Someone acts and you react, don’t you know the person is controlling you? Check the word again, you will understand…Re-Act!

Should I tell you something? All you need right now is Joy!

Happiness is good but it leaves you in difficult times but joy never does that! It is the best! It is the fruit of the Spirit! It stays by you in good times and in bad times.

The Bible says “So God created mankind in his own image,  in the image of God he created them…” Let’s stop there. Pam!

In God’s own image!…You are beautiful!

In His own image?…Wow, He has the kinds of your eyes, your ears, your hair, your complexion, your voice…wow, what a God of varieties!

The Bible says again that “God saw all that he had made, and it was very good…” Oh, glory!

When God created you, He had you in mind! He didn’t create you by accident. Others might make you feel like there is a particular definition of beauty but No! You are beautiful!

No! You’re not fat, you’re not ugly, your butt is perfect, your breasts are perfect, your skin is fine, your hair is lovely whether it’s curly or straight, short or long is just perfect. Your body is lovely, your nose is beautiful, those wrinkles in your face look great, YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL AND PERFECT IN GOD’S OWN WAY and that is why He is your First Love.

If God calls you good, who is that man that can come and face God’s work to call him ‘bad’ ???

Even when the man comes with such audacity, carry your mirror again and see what God made INTENTIONALLY! Forgive such an individual and say like Jesus ‘…they don’t know what they are doing…”

You are not a mistake! God didn’t make you in His bad days because He doesn’t have bad days. He didn’t make you when He was drunk, my Father never drinks! He didn’t make you when He was sleeping! He never sleeps, He never slumbers!

When next people provoke the inferiority complex in you, just look up and bind it! Whatever you bind here on earth shall be bound in heaven.

Every time you catch see the man in the mirror, kindly remind yourself that you are a beloved daughter and son of the King above all Kings. When you do that, peace would flood over you like a river … even if your dress and shoes are two sizes too big!

  1. You are amazing just the way you are
  2. Joy makes you see God and say “You did a super-duper work on me dad” even when others can you ugly

  2. We’ve long lived in the realm of happiness. The realm of temporary feelings that depend on situation. It is time to be joyful. Irrespective of situations or circumstances. Thanks for this, Lizzy. More grace. More inspiration in Jesus name. Amen.

  3. A friend of mine shared this blog post and the beginning cut my attention, enough to click, I’m glad I did…
